The Salem-St. Louis Chamber Orchestra will present a concerto from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in each concert this season beginning with Autumn on October 8th.

Next, the chorale begins their portion of the program, inducing works such as “Northern Lights,” a work by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo.  Continuing the theme of night time solitude is a setting of poems by Sara Teasdale’s Stars (set by Latvian composer, Eriks Esenvalds) and James Agee’s Sure On This Shining Night in the well-known setting by Samuel Barber.  We are also performing Esenvalds’ setting of another Teasdale poem, Only In Sleep, featuring soloists from the chorale.  The ACC regularly performs works by Eric Whitacre and featured on this program is Whitacre’s Sleep.

The Chamber Orchestra continues the theme of mystery with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. Eric Whitacre’s orchestral writing then receives the spotlight in “October,” arranged for string orchestra and percussion. Whitacre’s “Water Night” will also be performed, and was originally a choral setting of a poem by Octavio Paz (performed by the ACC in Season I) and will be presented in Whitacre’s version for strings.
