Hearts All Whole | May 19 & 20, 2018

We share a wonderful treat with our audiences as the Salem Chamber Orchestra and American Chamber Chorale welcome international singing star Christine Brewer as the guest star of our May, 2018 concerts.
Grammy Award-winning American soprano Christine Brewer’s appearances in opera, concert, and recital are marked by her own unique timbre, at once warm and brilliant, combined with a vibrant personality and emotional honesty reminiscent of the great sopranos of the past. Named one of the top 20 sopranos of all time (BBC Music), her range, golden tone, boundless power, and control make her a favorite of the stage and a highly sought-after recording artist, one who is “in her prime and sounding glorious” (Anthony Tommasini, New York Times).
The works of American novelist, critic, and poet James Agee figure prominently in this concert.  Agee’s book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men began as a 1936 journalistic assignment for Agee and photographer Walker Evans. Fortune magazine told Agee and Evans to spend a few days in the deep south to see what life was like among sharecroppers during the depression-era drought known as the “dust bowl”, especially in light of President Roosevelt’s New Deal, intended to help the poorest of the poor in the U.S. Those few days turned into eight weeks with Agee and Evans using words and photographs to document the extreme poverty of three sharecropper families in rural Alabama. We’ll show you the photographs as the Salem Chamber Orchestra plays music of Barber and Copland.
Agee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Death in the Family inspired the music of several great American composers heard on this concert including Samuel Barber’s beautiful work for soprano and orchestra, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Aaron Copland’s opera The Tender Land, and William Mayer’s opera A Death In The Family. You’ll hear two settings of Agee’s poem Sure On This Shining Night: one for soprano (Samuel Barber) and the other for chorus by Morten Lauridsen. The May 20th performance in Granite City will raise funds for the Holy Family Catholic Church Food Bank. We will collect food and contributions at the concert to support the concert and the Food Bank.
